The fort was built in the 13th century by the Vaghela king of Patan, or Anhilvada, following the shastric traditions described in the Vastu scriptures and is an example of the Rajput military style There are four gates in each cardinal direction.

The ruins other structures and a kund suggest the grandeur of the town in the 13th and 14th century. It came under the Gujarat Sultanate later. It was a district headquarter during the Mughal rule in Gujarat. The battle of Dabhoi was fought on 1 April between Trimbakrao Dabhade and Bajirao Peshwa.

Dabhoi or Darbhavati as it was known once upon a time belongs to that golden period of ancient India. When the architecture was probably at its best with temples of Khajuraho in North, Chola temples in South and even the Sun temple of nearby Modhera.
